BCS GURU RANKINGS - WEEK 3

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Yes, I know it is way too early to start thinking about this stuff, but it’s fun right? BCSGURU.com produces simulated BCS Rankings every week, and they are surprisingly accurate.  For the full rankings click here.

Here is my projection based on those rankings of what the BCS bowls would look like if the season ended today:

National Championship: (1) Alabama vs (2) Texas

Rose Bowl: (5) Cal vs (7) Penn State

Orange Bowl: (8) Miami vs (10) Cincinnati

Fiesta Bowl: (6) Boise State vs (12) Oklahoma

Sugar Bowl: (3) Florida vs (11) USC

Missed out: (4) LSU, (9) Mississippi

Observations: Every single one of these games would be exciting.  A lot of this will change, but this looks pretty fun to me.  Florida vs USC might be the best of the group.  4 teams for the SEC in the top 10 really screws LSU and Ole Miss, but that happens to someone every year.  I still think Cincinnati has a real legitimate chance to play for the title.  Way too early… but why not look at it?

OREGON/BOISE STATE PREVIEW

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

It’s finally here, kickoff for the 2009 college football season is tonight.  The Ducks will beat Boise State.

Chip Kelly is making his debut tonight, but don’t expect much of a change.  Obviously he knows the offense… he built it.  There are clear weaknesses at wide receiver with only one player returning who caught more than 5 passes last season.  The offensive line has questions marks, but they do have some experience.

The quarterback position was a liability in this matchup last year.  Nate Costa went down before the season started, Justin Roper was hurt the week prior at Purdue, Jeremiah Masoli and Chris Harper were each hurt early against BSU.  That left true freshman Darron Thomas under center, and he did a remarkeable job.  The Ducks just didn’t figure out what they wanted to do offensively until the second half.  This year, a healthy and experienced Jeremiah Masoli, who some believe is the fourth best quarterback in the country, along with LeGarrette Blount getting the majority of the carries, this offense should be in great shape.

There is much more on the line for Boise State than there is for Oregon.  Teams with pressure in the opener, traditionally struggle.  How can a team that is the ‘underdog’, from a non-bcs conference have more to lose? Easy.  If they lose this game, there is NO chance at a BCS bowl.  The Broncos went 12-0 last year and didn’t reach one of the big 5 bowls.  If they lose, this years shot is already over.  If the Ducks lose, it is still a big deal, but not as big.  BSU has won 64 of their last 66 home games.  Oregon can still reach a BCS bowl, and still contend for a Pac-10 title, and even a national championship with a loss.

Boise State has become everbodies favorite team.  They are a smaller school, with players that are not Pac-10 talent, yet they are EXPECTED to win every year.  That is a lot of pressure.  Too much. That is reason enough they will not win this football game.

My official pick: Oregon +5.5

The rest of the weekends ATS picks come tomorrow.
